Edmonds Among Four To Enter Cards Hall Of Fame

Four players have been selected for enshrinement in the recently-opened Cardinals Hall of Fame.

During an on-field ceremony Wednesday, the Cardinals announced that Willie McGee and Jim Edmonds would be the two modern inductees.

Marty Marion was chosen as the veteran inductee by a panel of team experts. Mike Shannon, who has been with the organization for 56 years as a player and broadcaster, was selected by the organization as the final member of the 2014 class.

The four of them will be officially inducted into the club's Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Aug. 16.

Starting Pitchers Rule The Day In MLB

Starting pitchers had a historic day Sunday throughout major league baseball.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, a record 10 pitchers, one third of all of Sunday's starters, threw at least seven innings while allowing three or fewer hits.

Adam Wainwright became the first pitcher to five wins this year as the Cardinals blanked the Pirates, according to an ESPN.com report.

Jose Abreu Sets Another Rookie Record

Jose Abreu drove in four runs and set a major league rookie record for RBIs through the end of April and the White Sox beat the Rays 9-2 on Sunday, according to an ESPN.com report.

Abreu, who had a two-run home run in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh, has 31 RBIs to lead the majors. Albert Pujols had the previous rookie RBI mark of 27 in 2001.

MLB To Name Reliever Award After Rivera, Hoffman

Major League Baseball will now award the Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year Award and the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award each season.

Both closers spent their entire careers in just one league.

Rivera pitched 19 seasons with the New York Yankees, and Hoffman saved games for the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers over an 18-year career.

"Both Mariano and Trevor represented our sport magnificently on and off the mound and earned the universal respect of our fans in their legendary careers," MLB commissioner Bud Selig said.

"I believe it is appropriate to redefine an existing award in honor of their contributions to baseball, and I am delighted that many of the most decorated relievers in history will select the winners."

Jeter Eighth On All-Time Hits List

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter gained sole possession of eighth place on baseball's all-time hit list with two hits in the first four innings Sunday against the Blue Jays, giving him 3,320 career hits and moving him one ahead of Paul Molitor.

Berkman, Oswalt Retire As Astros

Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt signed one-day contracts and retired as Astros on Saturday, according to an ESPN.com report.

Berkman is among the franchise leaders in home runs, RBIs, walks, runs and slugging percentage.

Oswalt, the MVP of the 2005 NLCS, ranks second in wins and strikeouts in franchise history.
